“Fondation Cartier”, designed by Jean Nouvel, resides in the Montparnasse district of Paris - the artistic heart of the city. The projects biggest design limitation was only being allowed to build on the existing footprint left by the demolished American Center. Due to the restriction of space, one of the driving factors of the design was to simulate a sense of spatial extension. Nouvel layers planes of glass to create a multiplicity of thresholds, allowing the powerful presence of greenery to add a dimension of visual ambiguity about interior and exterior space. These superimpositions create a dichotomy of real and virtual that allow for a unique experience of architecture and landscape.
